Meet The Engines
We have a number of steam and diesel engines at Perrygrove. We are always looking for more volunteers to help look after them. Get in touch if you think you can help.
You can adopt an engine here at Perrygrove as welll! Its a great gift package and your adoption helps to maintain our wonderful engines for future generations.
Spirit of Adventure
Built in 1994 by Exmoor Steam Railway in Bratton Fleming, she was ordered for the opening of the railway in 1996. She was our first steam engine and pulled all the trains for the first 10 years on her own. She is still a firm favourite among our drivers. She is a 0-6-0 tank engine.
Lydia
Built in 2008 by Alan Keef Ltd in Ross on Wye, she is the most powerful engine at Perrygrove. Certainly the most popular among our younger visitors she can often be seen on our busiest days. She is a 2-6-2 tank engine. In 2016 we commissioned BigJigs to produce a replica of Lydia. Compatible with all wooden railway products, you can purchase Lydia in our shop.
Anne
Built in 2004 by the Exmoor Steam Railway in Bratton Fleming, she was originally called John Hayton and worked on the Longleat Safari Park Railway. She was bought by one of our volunteers and came to Perrygrove in 2015. Renamed after her owners late mother, we made substantial improvements to her including her striking but popular new colour! She is a 0-6-2 tank engine.
Jubilee
Built in 1986 by Hunslet in Leeds, she is our main diesel locomotive and pulls most of our low season and toddler day trains. She was bought by Perrygrove and completely rebuilt from her previous use as a tunneling locomotive. She once worked on the Jubilee Line extension to the London underground, (hence her name). She is a 4wDH loco, meaning she has 4 wheels and is driven by hydraulic power. In 2018 we commissioned BigJigs to produce a replica of Jubilee. Compatible with all wooden railway products, you can purchase Jubilee in our shop.

Not often seen out and about we have a few more engines that make appearances’ at special events.
Soony
Soony is our family favourite. Owned by friends of Perrygrove she is too small to handle our passenger trains, but sometimes makes appearances’ at weddings and other events. She is a model of an American switching locomotive.
Workhorse
Workhorse was the first ever engine at Perrygrove. A small Diesel built by Simplex ltd, she worked in Scotland on a peat bog before ending up building the railway here in 1995. She is not fitted with air brakes for working with our carriages. Workhorse can often be found coupled to a wagon full of presents at Christmas.
Perrygrove’s Brand New Engine…
With the railway getting even busier we have commisioned the building of a brand new steam locomotive. Mr Hallworth arrived at Perrygrove in December 2023 and will now undergo thorough testing. We hope it will pulling passenger trains by Easter 2024.
Adopt an Engine
You can adopt any of the engines at Perrygrove Railway. It makes a great gift and helps us look after the engines all at the same time! Adoption lasts for 12 months. you recieve certificate, a large photo, a fact sheet and free child ticket to use within 12 months!
Please purchase using these links, then email us on info@perrygrove.co.uk with the adopters name to include in the pack. We try to send out the packs within 72 hours by Royal Mail where possible.
