The railway is ¾ mile long and gives a 1½ mile return trip. You are welcome to ride the train as often as you like, although at busy times we do give priority to those who have not yet had a ride. All our engine drivers are friendly and will explain the workings of the steam locomotives if you are interested. Click this link for operating dates and train times

April 2011 - from a holiday review:If you’re visiting from spring onwards, we recommend a trip to the Perrygrove Railway, too (www.perrygrove.co.uk) a mere 10-minute drive away. As well as the fun train ride, there was a fantastic treetop activity centre where Grace could burn off some energy with her dad.

From Netmums users:

Excellent place to go. Went with my mum (60+), 7 yr old and 3 yr old. We all enjoyed it and did the treasure hunt for a small fee which gets you going through the woods etc. looking for all the items. There are plenty of picnic benches or grass to sit down and eat a picnic, or the cafe to purchase your food. Would highly recommend it for a morning or afternoon visit.

We visited here with our 18 month old son and he loved it. Great value for money and highly recommended.

Here's a great review of our autumn Vintage Trains event in 2011, from Rail News, written by the well-known author Cliff Thomas.

From a blog describing a visit in 2007: The site contains a 3/4 mile line which twists and turns on itself up a hill side to a top station....The run through established woodland up gradients of up to 1 in 30 makes for a very interesting ride..... With young children you will easily spent a full morning or afternoon here'

In its March 2005 edition Vintage Spirit magazine's contributor Paul Strong said this about our railway: 'What a lovely little set-up .... There is much to interest children, particularly a treasure hunt where clues can be spotted from the train or via footpaths through the woodland. If visiting Coleford do go.'

Another reviewer described his visit and wrote: "We'll have to come again" suggested the household authorities - which meant that she too had thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Well worth a look if you're in the area - plenty to hold the interest of younger visitors too - click Geoffspages.

Here's what some of our young visitors thought: "just a few miles North of Chepstow is the Perrygrove Railway. We thought this was the best railway in the world! They had a treasure hunt, in which we had to search for clues around the railway before we could open the treasure chest! We have been here three times!- click Dalefield.

Here's a good review of our Halloween event, from the Hurley family blog.

Our children's activities include plenty of outdoor space in our woods, a covered picnic and play area at Foxy Hollow (a short walk from Oakiron station), an indoor village with secret passages, our new treehouses, and a Brio table for the younger children. Outdoor clothes and shoes are needed in the wood.
Our Treasure Hunts are very popular - we supply the key to unlock your box of hidden treasure and the clues you need to find it. Ride away on the train to hunt for clues in the woods, or stay on the train and find them at the stations. Then ride back to the secret village to find the treasure - which can be shared. There is no charge or time limit for the indoor village with secret passages - but there is a small charge for the treasure hunt - see our Prices page for details.
Our café offers sandwiches freshly made to order, hot and cold drinks, cakes, and ice cream in season. Prices are reasonable
Picnics - Unlike some parks we are very happy if you bring a picnic, for which we provide seats in the open, in the woods, and under cover in our carriage shed and at Foxy Hollow. But please take your picnic rubbish home.
Disabled visitors are welcome. We have a W.C. which is accessible to people with mobility impairment. There is access for up to 3 wheelchairs on the train. Perrygrove station, the main platform, the Treasure Hunt boxes and the Treetop Adventure are accessible by ramps, and the short version of the Treasure Hunt can be completed without leaving the train. Customers with impaired vision, hearing etc. will be assisted by our staff on request. We are experienced in serving customers with learning difficulties but we do need there to be an adequate ratio of carers to clients to comply with current health and safety requirements. We do not give discounts to carers.
DOGS  We like dogs but (sorry) they can't enter the site at Perrygrove. The reasons are that we need to provide a suitable environment for children including very young children, and we keep free-range poultry and waterfowl. We know that most dog owners are responsible people but the trouble is that we can't tell who is responsible and who is not when customers walk up to our ticket counter. We make an exception for Guide and Hearing Dogs in harness and we will lend a water bowl to any dog who arrives at Perrygrove feeling thirsty. We will also do our best to park dogs' cars in shade (but this is not easy and not guaranteed, especially in high summer).
You do not need to book in advance for a visit to Perrygrove, except for the following occasions: For all other occasions there is no need to book, just turn up!
On public operating days we usually open at 10:30 am. We close at either 4:30 or 5:00 pm depending on the time of year - please check our Operating dates and train times page for the day you are thinking of coming.
